Senator Bernie Sanders has endorsed Representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota to be the next chair of the Democratic National Committee, The Hill has reported.
Ellison, who endorsed Sanders in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary, is a progressive and one of two Muslim-Americans in Congress. Ellison was famously dismissed by ABC's George Stephanopoulos in July 2015 when he warned Democrats that Donald Trump could plausibly win the 2016 election.
The election is set for March 2017, though a current MoveOn.Org petition to appoint Ellison as chair has racked up nearly 7,000 signatures. The previous DNC chair, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, was fired after emails released by Wikileaks revealed that she and other DNC officials had colluded with Hillary Clinton's campaign. Current interim Chair Donna Brazile was also later revealed to have passed CNN debate questions to the Clinton campaign.
