Donald Trump will be the next president of the United States, after securing a decisive victory in Tuesday's presidential election. Trump's victory was announced on early Wednesday morning after several key swing states were called in his favor by multiple major media outlets. At 2:39 a.m. on Wednesday, CNN reported that Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump and conceded the race.
At a victory party in New York, on Wednesday, Trump confirmed the phonecall and said, "She congratulated us on our victory and I congratulated her and her family on a hard fought campaign." He seemed to be reading a pre-written speech and didn't show any of the racist, divisive demagoguery he displayed on the campaign trail, saying he wanted America to "come together as one united people."
Trump's win in general, certainly constitutes an upset, as most major media outlets favored Clinton by a substantial margin. Among the most surprising results, Trump also did incredibly well in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, typically Democratic strongholds. As of yesterday, 538 projected Clinton to win in roughly 71% of possible scenarios. Battleground states like Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida all fell in Trump's favor.
Even before the official result was announced, the world's economy had an extremely violent reaction to the news of Trump's possible victory.
