"What You Get" is the third smooth single we've heard from Toronto group DIANA's sophomore album Familiar Touch, following "Confession" and "Slipping Away." Just like those tracks "What You Get" is the work of an even more exciting band: Carmen Elle's voice floats impressively, the blend of synths approaches rapture, and the band's handling of its funk-pop fusion is more assured than ever.
"There were moments on Perpetual Surrender where we felt like we'd painted ourselves into a corner in an attempt to sound cool," the band's Kieran Adams told NPR, where the song premiered. "This time around, we checked ourselves every step of the way. We wanted it to feel personal. We talked a lot about Sade because Sade nails intimacy. When she's singing, you feel like she's looking you right in the eyes, in your ear, by your side. That's what we're going for."
Familiar Touch is out November 18.
