Born in The Congo and based in Belgium, Baloji is a dynamic rapper and all-around creative. Since The FADER last checked in with him to premiere the politically charged, Petite Noire-assisted "Capture," he's announced his signing to U.K. indie powerhouse Bella Union. To celebrate, the label released a new single, "Spoiler," from his forthcoming 64 bits and Malachite EP.
"Spoiler" takes things to the dance floor, recruiting his l'Orchestra de la Katuba ensemble for a jam that's pretty impossible not to move to. The song's hook translates to, Stop bringing me back to my worries, stop bringing me back to the problem of the day. But Baloji's bars take things a step beyond just calling someone out for killing the vibe: We came to escape reality...tranquilizer in the cup, find some illusions sold cheap? It makes sense, given some of the harsh realities his music has spoken to in the past. If "Spoiler" is escapism, it's the kind that doesn't necessarily come easy.
