There's a lot of insight for newcomers—Tagaq defines throat singing as "a friendly competition, it's not meant to be this big spiritual thing, [it's] a vocal competition, a mental competition to see who has the most lung capacity and the quickest mind." She also discusses the untold history of the human rights abuses in Canada's residential schools, and working with A Tribe Called Red, which she calls a "really respectful" process. At the end, she brings up a beatboxer for a round of competitive throat singing. Watch the entire lecture above.
