DENA Made A Breezy Summer Jam About Falling Out Of Love
“I Like You / I Lied To You” is less of a bummer than it sounds.
DENA, the queen of deadpan pop, is back this September with a new EP called Trust on her label Normal Surround. On the release's stand-out "I Like You / I Lied To You," the Berlin-based artist matches breezy funk guitars with romantic turmoil, making a tune almost as casually disarming as her lightly satirical break-out hit "Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools." The title of the track pretty much captures the song's bittersweet push and pull, but DENA elaborated further to The FADER over email: "I wrote this song in one breath in a jam with my friend Michel Collet, who played the guitar and bass. I wanted to reflect on the contradiction that love can become when there is fear of losing involved. It’s about building imaginary walls, thinking that you can save yourself or the other person from heartbreak." Listen below.
