Today, the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games will commence. I've spent the last few weeks basking in a good deal of nostalgia. Indulging my childhood adoration for the swift speed, fierce physiques, and most of all the standout style of track and field athletes. Sure, they're conquering long distances in fleeting seconds but many show up to win decked out in custom attire, vibrant hair and even wearing makeup and jewelry.
Without a team to distract the eye, track and field gives athletes the perfect opportunity to bring their own personal style and flair to the race. The looks are bright and bold, making it easy to have distinctive favorites. The legendary Florence Griffith Joyner set world records in the late 1980s and sliced through the wind with her signature long decorative nails. After her followed others, like Michael Johnson, known for his tenacious speed as well as his majestic gold track shoes.
I rounded up some of The FADER's favorite track and field style moments, because a good fit always makes it to the finish line.
