M.I.A. Accuses MTV Video Music Awards Of “Racism, Sexism, Classism, Elitism”
The British artist reacts to the 2016 nominations.
The nominees for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards were revealed on July 26 with Beyoncé leading the charge with 11 nominations. Beyoncé's "Formation" is up for Video of the Year alongside efforts from Adele, Drake, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West. M.I.A. is not happy about this shortlist and took to Twitter to protest as to why her "Borders" promo has not been recognized by MTV.
“This is a perfect example of ‘allowed’ voice vs excluded voices,” she tweeted. "Racism sexism classism elitism #dontwantyourlane!" See her tweets below.
The FADER has reached out to MTV who replied "No comment" in response to the tweets. M.I.A.'s new album A.I.M. is released on September 9.
