With four projects already under his belt in just a year, the standout being April's Mind of a Menace 2, YoungBoy has gone on to establish himself as one of the most exciting and consistent rappers in his region. Though he's only 16 years old, YoungBoy raps well beyond his years - Kodak Black comes to mind as a comparison - often hinting at intensely personal experiences in his music that give the listener a small window into his life in North Baton Rouge.
On "So Long," a track from his recent Before I Go EP, YoungBoy is focused on his imminent rise. When my Grandma died, I jumped off the porch and started hustlin', he raps in the opening lines, marking the beginning of the story he tells in the first verse. While the song itself is about a hunger for recognition, the David G-directed visual finds YoungBoy and friends showing off what they have already: they pose with their pet snake and race foreign cars on a residential Baton Rouge street.
