Bernie Sanders Mentioned Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Resignation And The Crowd Went Nuts
The senator was also booed for telling his supporters that they “must” support Hillary Clinton.
Bernie Sanders, addressing his delegates in advance of this week's Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, received huge cheers when he mentioned the impending resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the soon-to-be-former head of the Democratic National Committee.
Their celebration stems from the release of over 20,000 emails hacked from the DNC servers and released by Wikileaks, some of which appeared to show Wasserman Schultz and other DNC operatives favoring Hillary Clinton's primary campaign against Bernie Sanders. In one email, Wasserman Schultz referred to Sanders as "someone who has never been a member of the Democratic Party and has no understanding of what we do," in reference to the Vermont senator's insistence that he was not receiving impartial treatment. Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation soon after the emails were made public.
Later in the speech when Sanders received loud disapproval from the crowd when he told "we must elect Hillary Clinton."
Wasserman Schultz, also a congresswoman, was met with boos and jeering this morning from Sanders supporters when she addressed a room of delegates from her home state of Florida. As a result, she will no longer open the Philadelphia convention, as is the usual tradition for the National Committee's head of both major parties.
In a statement following Wasserman Schultz's dismissal, presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton thanked her "for her leadership of the Democratic National Convention over the past five years." She announced her intention to campaign for Wasserman Schultz, who is up for reelection this year, and that Wasserman Schultz would serve as an "honorary chair of my campaign."
