Harmony Tividad’s music is usually pretty straight to the point. Last year, she released Before The World Was Big as one-half of the band Girlpool, which, although technically simple, is heart-rending in its sincerity and candor. To hear her venture into more intricate sonic territory certainly proves interesting — but does her music retain its trademark punch when you add lo-fi electronics and delays, mangled hi-hats and synth arpeggios?
The answer, it seems, is yes. On her new solo track, “What Chaos Is Imaginary,” Tividad’s voice isn’t lost in the tangle of electronics, but instead flutters above it with poignant verses: Everything's overrated/ I'm looking from too close / I'll take one ticket to heaven / dress up like the Holy Ghost. No, it’s not Squarepusher or Aphex Twin in its complexity and production value — no polyrhythms or high-end equipment here — but the song triumphs through its economy of means and quirky samples.
