The Avalanches Discuss The Samples And Features On Their New Album Wildflower
Juggalos, sleep-talking, and LSD all went into their new record.
Wildflower, the new album from The Avalanches 16 years in the making, is out next week and streaming now on Apple Music. Speaking with Triple J, the band's Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi discussed the samples on the new record, and gave some background on the record's creation and guest features.
Di Blasi talked about how his upbringing influenced "Frankie Sinatra," the first Wildflower single with Danny Brown and MF DOOM. "My favourite part about this song is the 'Favourite Things' sample, because growing up with five brothers and sisters we used to all watch musicals and The Sound of Music was one of the favourites. We were like little Von Trapp family singers ourselves."
"If I Was A Folkstar," a track with Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi, was inspired by a romantic acid trip he took with his fiancee. "It's in fact about a night when him and his wife-to-be took LSD on a beach and the experiences they had," Chater said. "It's a beautiful thing."
Unsurprisingly, the samples on the album are incredibly varied. Just the non-musical ones range from a documentary about Juggalos to an album of sleepy mumblings and back again.
Di Blasi also revealed that the album was almost called "Wildfire," "'cause I've been watching too much Game of Thrones." Listen to "Colours," the second Wildflower single, below.
