Following Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar's opening performance at the 2016 BET Awards in Los Angeles, Erykah Badu, Bilal, and The Roots took the stage for the first set of performances in tribute of Prince's passing on April 21, 2016.
Earlier in the year, during Madonna's Prince tribute during the Billboard Music Awards, BET's Twitter account threw shade at the network, tweeting their own Prince tribute trailer and assuring viewers, "Yeah, we saw that. Don't worry. We got you." BET later told The FADER that their tribute to Prince would be a bit larger in scope than what the Billboard Music Awards had to offer.
Erykah started the tribute by delivering her rendition of "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker." Then, Bilal took the stage to perform a powerful cover of "The Beautiful Ones." They were both backed by The Roots as musical accompaniment. Watch above.
