FADER Mix: Ikonika & Scratcha DVA

Hyperdub producers Ikonika and Scratcha DVA are hitting the U.S. together this summer, and you'd be a fool to miss them. To celebrate, the duo also known as Avamix ("'ave a mix" — get it?) have put together a thoroughly rowdy FADER Mix, with dancehall and hip-hop sliding effortlessly into grime and U.K. funky. Plus, there's shout-outs from artist pals on both sides of the atlantic (including Cooly G, Jubilee, Sudanim, and more). Where are you right now? Describe your surroundings.

IKONIKA: I'm in my studio finishing the last track off my new album. I just got a plant, so I've been staring at him quite a bit. There's some incense burning and I'm sipping Assam tea. I heard some thunder but it ain't raining.

Tell us a bit about this mix — what do you imagine people doing while listening to it?

We recorded at Radar Radio, one take, no practise, with a broken mixer, and drunk. I imagine people to say, "Ooh, 'aving a mix are we?"

What are you working on and when can we expect a new release?

Hopefully an album by the end of the year, if I can budge this hi-hat block.

Who’s your favorite new artist right now?

Jammz.

How have you found the experience of teaching girls to produce with E.M.M.A. and Radar Radio?

First off, big up Radar for providing the space, time, and resources...other people have been shit to be honest.

We just finished the second one. It was great! We had a really focused group that were confident and positive. I can't wait to hear their tunes. Hopefully we will be able to do a lot more workshops very soon.

Apart from playing shows, what are you excited to do in the U.S. this summer?

Get my skin out, drink some juice, and get in the studio with some lovely people. But really it's about spending time with Scratcha and making our friendship stronger.

What's the last book you read that had a big impact on you and why?

Ham on Rye by Bukowski. It confirmed that people are shit.

And finally, what's your favorite dish to cook and how do you make it?

I cook a lot. My favourite though is lamb kofta on the BBQ, with my special baba ghanoush.

For the kofta you need to whack an onion, some garlic, chili flakes, ground cumin, ground coriander, fresh parsley salt and pepper in a food processor. Add to lamb mince (it has to be a bit fatty). Mix well with your hands, chuck them on skewers and cook on the BBQ until they look buff.

Baba ghanoush takes a bit of prep. You wanna char the skins on the BBQ. Then peel them off exposing the sexy flesh. Drain the sexy flesh for an hour, until most of the liquid is gone. Add minced garlic, tahini, parsley salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon. Stir well. Add some good extra virgin olive oil, sumac, and roasted pine nuts for garnish.

Serve with pitta bread and a nice salad.
