Justin Bieber And Skrillex Are Getting Sued Over “Sorry”

According to TMZ, Casey Dienel aka White Hinterland is suing Justin Bieber and producer Skrillex over the melody for their 2015 smash "Sorry." The musician says that "Sorry" interpolates melodies from her song "Ring The Bell" (watch the music video above).

Dienel says that "Sorry" contains "unique characteristics of the female vocal riff" from her original song, as well as other musical similarities. She claims that she tried to contact Bieber in December of 2015, but he never responded. Dienel's lawsuit asks that Bieber no longer play the song, and pay an unspecified amount of money.

The FADER has reached out to representatives for Justin Bieber, White Hinterland, and Skrillex for comment.

Update (May 26, 5:15 p.m.): White Hinterland has shared a Facebook post about the lawsuit. "Justin Bieber is the world’s biggest artist, and I’m sure that he and his team will launch a full attack against me," she writes. "But, in the end, I was left with no other option. I believe I have an obligation to stand up for my music and art."

Update (May 27 7:30 p.m.): Skrillex recorded a video of himself playing a reference track Julia Michaels, who co-wrote "Sorry", from the original session where the song was recorded. Skrillex shows how he pitched up her vocal for the riff on Justin Bieber's "Sorry".

Update (May 27 10:02 p.m.): Justin Bieber has also addressed White Hinterland's lawsuit, reposting Skrillex's video with the hashtag #wedontsteal.
