Shia LaBeouf and his collaborators, British artist Luke Turner and Finnish artist Nastja Säde Rönkkö, have just launched their latest project #TAKEMEANYWHERE. Until June 23, the three will be tweeting their GPS coordinates each day (as well as displaying them on the website takemeanywhere.vice.com), inviting members of the public to pick them up and literally take them anywhere.
The project channels the idealism of the U.S. road trip — according to the press release, "The American road trip has long been symbolic of a collective yearning to seek out beauty and truth within a corrupt nation. As part of MediaLive 2016’s Corruption theme [at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art], #TAKEMEANYWHERE asks, can we find such truths within the corrupted networks of society, and preserve something of the utopian naivety of the Internet age?"
#TAKEMEANYWHERE also shares its name with a recent solo performance project by Rönkkö, in which she sat blindfolded on a horse and allowed it to take her where it wanted to go. In many ways, this new iteration of the project embodies the same essential idea — of instilling total, almost naïve trust in the unknown. Whether it's more sensible to entrust your fate to a horse or to people you've never met before is debatable.
However, it seems like the trio are having a blast on their road trip so far. In the clips below, you can see them join a thrilled group for lunch in Colorado, where, according to TIME, LaBeouf kept buying rounds of beer for everybody. As you can see in the YouTube clip below, he even had a go at rapping "Juicy" for his new friends.
