Judge Holden, the hellish scholar in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, says, “The desert upon which so many have been broken is vast and calls for largeness of heart but it is also ultimately empty.” Who has a larger heart, even in the face of despair, than Weaves? Behind every crunchy riff and dizzy wail lies a clear and indomitable spirit. Fittingly, the “bent pop” band's new video “One More” shows how to deal with all of life's barren expanses, literal or otherwise: with pom-poms and pals, even if, as the lyrics of bandleader Jasmyn Burke suggest, your lifeboat only has limited room.
They came together in Toronto, but Weaves will take on the world June 17 with their self-titled debut album, out on Kanine/Buzz Records/Memphis Industries. The band's co-founder and guitarist Morgan Waters told us about how touring life nearly led four nice Canadians to a violent climax the Judge would have likely approved of.
We made this video while on our first American tour. We didn't know if we were going to kill each other, being stuck in a van together the whole time. We shot this video by ourselves in Rock City, New Mexico in the middle of our drive from Toronto to Los Angeles. We're Canadians, we had to get to know the desert the old fashioned way: with pom poms and a video camera. I filmed Jasmyn from the back of the van as we both yelled at Spencer to drive the right speed while Zach did playback and offered moral support. We smelled burning and assumed it was the smell of America but the mechanic told us the emergency brake was stuck.
