With a penchant for creating charmingly slacker synth-pop tunes, the L.A.-based Jerry Paper regularly blends acoustic sounds with electronic beats. Today we’re debuting “Ginger & Ruth,” the vibrant first single off Toon Time Raw!, the forthcoming Jerry Paper full-length that features backing instrumentation by an anonymous jazz band called Easy Feelings Unlimited. Layering honky-tonk keyboard over bossa nova guitar strumming, Nathan surrounds the heavy existentialism of the lyrics with a lackadaisically whimsical soundscape.
”Toon Time Raw! focuses on the ordinary lives of cartoon characters, and ’Ginger & Ruth’ is certainly a crystallization of that inquiry," Nathan told the FADER in an email. “The first couple lines of the song almost serve as a mission statement for the album as a whole; to explore the quotidian aches and pains of being a Being/ All the small nothings, they're something.“ Toon Time Raw! is out June 17 on Brooklyn label Bayonet Records.
