Earlier this week, Beats 1 aired a lengthy interview between Skepta and Zane Lowe. In addition to discussing his forthcoming Konnichiwa album, Skepta revealed that he’s assisting Drake with the revival of the Top Boy series, which went off the air in 2013.
“We want to do bigger things than just our crew,” the grime MC noted. “Even with the Top Boy series with Ashley Walters... I’ve been talking like on the creative direction wave with Drake about the series. Making greatness with it. The whole style of what’s going on in London, the sound, is real. It’s an actual thing that actually happened. So it deserves to be on the telly.”
Skepta sees his recent surge in popularity and the emergence of Top Boy as linked. “That’s what’s great about what’s been happening,” he explained to Lowe. “It’s not just my music. Not everyone just listens to Grime now ‘cause of Skepta. They like how we speak, they like the slang, they like how we dress, they listen to the music. It’s everything.”
“Stuff like Top Boy was an addition to what I did,” the MC continued. “All that stuff is what I want to put on that map. With Drake fully understanding that… he can look at me at say, ‘yeah, what you do, I can see... And I’m gonna keep pushing wherever you think—what is it Skepta? What you need? A Top Boy series? Let’s go.’”
Revisit the interview here; the conversation turns to Top Boy around the 11:40 mark.
