Vybz Kartel Goes Pop On “Forever (No Drama)”

The incarcerated deejay may have a major hit on his hands.

April 13, 2016

Despite being locked up for the last five years after being arrested in 2011 and convicted of murder in 2014, Vybz Kartel has continued to rule dancehall from behind bars. Speculation over whether or not Kartel was recording in prison was put to rest in 2014 following a statement from his lawyers, yet the World Boss's voice continues to appear on new riddims, and he's planning to release a new brand of rum this year.

"Forever (No Drama)" is a collaborative effort with ZJ Liquid, a renowned Jamaican radio DJ and producer. Strings and rolling percussion underlay Kartel, as he sings, You move so smooth, like acrobat/ the world is a stage, it's all an act. With Rihanna and Drake's dancehall-inflected "Work" topping the charts for the eighth week in a row, the time seems right for a song from Jamaica to crossover once again.

"Forever (No Drama)" will appear on ZJ Liquid's MSquared compilation album, due out April 15, which also features cuts from Sean Paul, Gyptian, and Beenie Man.
