An appetite for funk is clearly a family thing for Lou Phelps and his older brother, Kaytranada. Two years ago the siblings dropped a stellar mixtape, Supreme Laziness, as the The Celestics and now Lou Phelps (formerly Louie P) is breaking out. "Rent Is Due" is his first solo track since The Celestics, and it's a smoky, razzle dazzle cha cha produced by Planet Giza with a helping hand from big bro, Kay. Lou keeps time with a melodic, upbeat flow and that nimble energy is balanced out with a grizzled verse from Key!.
"A couple months ago, Dumix of Planet Giza sent me this instrumental while I was working on my new mixtape. The funky/Caribbean baseline and the feel made me want to rap on it, but it would be too simple with just myself on the track," Lou Phelps writes in an e-mail to The FADER. "I really fuck with Key!'s music and I thought he would bring an unexpected flavor. So I flew to LA from Phoenix while on tour with Kaytra to met Key! at the studio. I showed him the beat, and what I had done so far. After a few adjustments, we had 'Rent Is Due.'"
