New York-based DJ Tony Lowe, known as Rainstick, has made a new and rather explicit mix appropriately titled “Sextape.” We’ve seen what Lowe can do with as one half of Blazer Sound System—check last summer's dubplate heavy FADER Mix—and now he's upping the temperature with slackness-centric mix—the dancehall sub-genre that embraces overtly sexual lyrics—just in time for Valentine's Day.
“I went to Jamaica three times last year, a lot of these are big hits," Lowe told The FADER over email. "Slackness has always been a thing down there, but the last couple years the music has reached new levels of sophistication and sexiness. This music is straight up, liberating and fun, unlike the misogyny and repression of American rap. In [Jamaica], female artists are bringing it more and more.”
The mix features endearing tunes like Stacious’ “Cute Bubble” and those on the dirtier side like Vybz Kartel’s “My Rainbow.” Stream in full here, and if you're in N.Y.C. experience the vibe in person at Blazer Sound System's party this Saturday (flyer below.)
