Fresh off a stellar sixth album with her inventive sister act CocoRosie, Bianca Casady is releasing her first-ever solo album, Oscar Hocks, on January 29. Both Casadys always surround themselves with interesting people, and the two record labels involved with this LP are worth nods: in North and South America it's via Atlas Chair, co-owned by Le Tigre's JD Samson, and in Europe it's via FANTASYmusic, founded by the perennially slept-on o F F Love.
If you preorder the album now, you'll receive the single "RoadKill," which is premiering here today with a music video from Casady's play Mother Hunting. Keeping with the clown motif, it depicts three dancing widow-sisters after they've escaped from jail and are trying to hitch a ride.
The lyrics include weird resonances between Casady's childhood and adult life, she pointed out in an email to The FADER: her father's habit of slamming on the brakes when he saw roadkill on the highway, and her own experience, two years ago, finding a dead falcon on the side of the road and salvaging its feathers. Full circle, I've come full circle, she sings. You may have turned me away from magic, but not away from madness.
