Govales Wants You To Go “All In” Or Nothin’
Produced by Kaytranada.
At first blush, the name Govales might not ring any bells, but the singer-songwriter's got chops: he got his first look in the industry co-writing and producing for Bassline, who opened for B2K on their Scream and Vote or Die tours back in 2003. He then transitioned to performing solo under the moniker Mike Jaggerr, touring alongside Busta Rhymes and Big K.R.I.T, among others. After dropping a mixtape, The Eleventh Hour, he has since retreated from the limelight to hone his sound and concepts for a new project, titled G-Spot.
"All In" is the first taste of Govales' new direction, which the singer has described as "psychedelic-pop." The track, produced by Kaytranada, has a sexy swagger that harkens back to Prince. The lyrics tell of the breaking point in a relationship that demands complete devotion, or none at all, while also managing to name-drop Jodeci and Usher. It's a love letter to the kind of baby-making music that the singer himself strives to make. Kaytra's production, meanwhile, is sultry and lends an erotic bounce to the entire affair.
As for how the collaboration came to be, Govales actually told The FADER that we played a part in its inception: "I bumped into Kay and his manager Will on 23rd street in N.Y. with a mutual friend of ours about a year, year and a half ago on their way to the Fader office and we stopped and exchanged info and chopped it up," he said, before adding: "Kay sent over a dropbox link with mad ideas and different styles. That night I cut two records back to back off the vibe. One called 'Out of this World' & the other 'ALL IN.' and here we are."
Be on the lookout for G-Spot, dropping some time next year.
