Public Enemy have been touring the U.K. in support of The Prodigy on a massive arena tour, but they almost missed their show at Sheffield arena after a taxi failed to pick them up from a local record shop where they were doing a signing.
50-year-old British photographer Kevin Wells, the last person in the queue to get his CD signed, offered up his car to Flavor Flav and Chuck D when a member of the entourage called out, “Does anyone have a car? We’re running late.” Wells told the band he had his Ford Focus parked down the road and could take them to the arena, where they were set to play in just 45 minutes.
Wells described the experience as "very, very surreal" to The Guardian. "We all walked to the car—Flavor Flav, Chuck D and two of their entourage—and they all just piled in. I’m local to Sheffield so I know all the back streets to get there pretty sharpish so I didn’t feel too tense. I knew I could get them there in time.”
Even more incredibly, Wells had a compilation CD playing in the car with "Bohemian Rhapsody" on it. "It was on low but suddenly when "Bohemian Rhapsody" came on, one of the entourage at the front shouted ‘Bo Rap! Waynes World!’ and they all started headbanging in the back of the car," Wells said. "I kept looking in the rear view mirror and I could see Flavor Flav with his sunglasses on and his big clock and I couldn’t believe it."
In the end, Wells got the band to the show in 15 minutes, though he had trouble convincing the venue that it was actually Public Enemy in his back seat. Sadly, he couldn't make it to the show, but he did grab the selfie of the year before he left.
