Mark McGuire’s “Earth: 2015” Is An Epic Ten-Minute Electronica Battle
His second solo album Beyond Belief is out now via Dead Oceans.
Since his departure as the guitarist of Emeralds, L.A. musician Mark McGuire has been hard at work on his solo project—formulating ambient instrumentals inspired by the macro of space and the micro of human relationships. This Friday, he will release his second album Beyond Belief, in which he delves even further into the detailed layers of his electronic compositions.
Premiering above, the video for the single "Earth: 2015" is a ten-minute long battle between layers of crunchy synths, anxious arpeggio blips, and a dismantled assortment of percussion. The accompanying visual is a psychedelic cacophony of superimposed images of what appears to be microscope slides: fluttering fragments of amoeba structures and outlines of plant veins dance around a rainbow oil slick Earth.
"'Earth: 2015' is about the intense love and pain, chaos and joy that Mother Earth is feeling in her heart of hearts as humanity accelerates further and further into the 21st century," Mark McGuire told The FADER over email. "I called on friend and LA artist Suzy Poling to help bring these feelings to sight, which her dense and intricate web of colors and synchronized broken kaleidoscope landscapes have done beautifully."
