What Parisians Mourning At The Bataclan Theatre Are Thinking Right Now
Sunday night in Paris was a time for prayer and stillness.
The Bataclan Theatre has been a staple of Parisian nightlife since the late 19th century. It hosted some of the earliest performances of cabaret singer Édith Piaf; The Velvet Underground and Prince have played there, and so has Young Thug, who appeared just days before a devastating attack at the Bataclan on Friday killed at least 89 people and wounded several hundred more. “No words suffice to express the magnitude of our grief,” the concert hall wrote on Facebook on Monday. "Many of you have wanted to gather in remembrance at the Bataclan. Unfortunately, the authorities still need to work at the site. We will keep you informed about when it will be possible to assemble in front of the hall."
On late Sunday afternoon, though, hundreds of Parisians gathered at the Bataclan, paying their respects at a barricade in front of the hall. One card dropped off at the venue said, "Hey Guillaume, I hope that where you are, the music is good. And fuck those bastards who took your life.”
