Atlanta rapper J.I.D teams with 6lack, Marian Mereba, and Pell for eerie yet insightful “Letters.” 6lack and Marian Mereba's emotional vocals—I don’t want you to try, cause I don’t want you to die like me/ like me—are set against a steady beat built on airy cymbals and piano loop that instills a tone of sadness and longing. But when J.I.D appears, he's spitting hints of optimism and attempting to face the dark head-on: I pray to God because I’m afraid to die and never been afraid/ And if baby today it probably make me more man, he raps.
On the track J.I.D showcases his dynamic flow and lyrical prowess. Against the somber production, his lyrics are able to create a sense of hope. "This song came from a dark place but with a touch of optimism about things to come in the future," he explained in an email to The FADER. "It was inspired by a combination of James Blake and Jack Daniels."
