London-based producer Faze Miyake got his big break in 2011 when Boy Better Know played his instrumental "Take Off" on their Rinse FM show. So there's a poetic justice to the fact that his self-titled debut album has just been released on Rinse—and with help from Sasha Go Hard, Inga Copeland, and Little Simz, the record melts grime's sharp edges into hip-hop beats with a finesse that makes him unmistakably the same mind behind "Take Off." To celebrate Faze Miyake's release, the man himself has crafted a FADER Mix that glides like a hoverboard in the year 2020 through tracks from Wiley, Visionist, and Miyake himself all the way to Young Thug and jumpman jumpman jumpman jumpman! Where are you right now? Please describe your surroundings.
FAZE MIYAKE: My girl's bed. There are old people outside posted on the block, they're cool though. Stay scheming.
Tell us a bit about the mix—what do you imagine people doing while listening to it?
I just wanted to express a certain style with this one...I expect people bopping their head excessively, resulting in some pain after. Maybe a couple off-key dance moves, some screwed up faces and fist pumps.
You debut album is billed as a "vision of 21st century sound system music." What does that vision look like to you?
It sounds like flying cars and bikes and hot girls and me in sunglasses and a long coat in a corner of a club doing a 2-step with my drink hovering near my hand while Faze Miyake tunes batter the speakers.
What's your earliest sound system memory?
Notting Hill Carnival when I was like 12. Maybe before that too, with people in my family just blaring music out a lot. That was always happening, but carnival I was with school friends. I didn't really get it, but music was very loud and I liked it.
What's the last book you read that had a big impact on you?
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.
And finally, what's you favorite dish to cook and how do you make it?
I have taken an enjoyment in cooking lately, just as much as I love making music. I am a homely person at heart and I like to chill out. When I'm not fucking up some commas I'm fucking up some hummus! My favourite dish up to date has been salmon pasta bake. It's really easy you just throw everything in and throw in the oven, obviously. Big up Cook Daily in London, really enjoy their food even though it's vegan.
