Earlier this year, Mila J showcased a different side of her sound on the Press Start EP, a joint effort with BC Kingdom. The collaborators reconnected recently to put their own spin on Drake's "Hotline Bling." Theirs is one of the best versions yet: BC Kingdom and Jonny On The Rocks rearrange the beat around blobs of synthesizer—similar to the breezy line that buoys Jamie xx's "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)—and a gloomy undercurrent of bass. Mila's vocals are slurry clouds.
At this point, there may be enough covers of "Hotline Bling" for an entire tribute CD dedicated to the song. Interestingly, most of the new versions have come from female artists: Alessia Cara, Kehlani, Erykah Badu. On the most recent Hot 100, Drake's tune hit No. 3.
