In what's possibly your last chance to see Novelist performing with south London grime crew The Square since he announced his departure on Twitter this week, Black Cab Sessions have shared an interactive video of the group performing their anthem "Lewisham McDeez."
Black Cab Sessions are known for producing cute live sessions with a twist: hailing down London's iconic black taxis and getting artists like Solange, Run The Jewels and Mac DeMarco to perform in the back seat. Obviously, when it came to hosting nine teenage grime MCs, that concept got a little stretched. "Luckily there was a solution," Black Cab Sessions told The FADER in a statement. "More cabs. Hailing down three of London’s finest drivers, we split the crew up into the different cabs, and got them to record one track together. Using some nifty technology from London film agency Just So we have been able to turn all of this into one session, where the viewer can switch between the three cabs instantly at the touch of a button."
The multi-screen video, premiering above, feels like the perfect way to experience The Square's livewire energy—and especially "Lewisham McDeez," their biggest posse cut and ode to their local McDonald's. "Lewisham McDeez is the hot spot where everyone goes after school, where we hang out, chirps [flirt with] girls, all the usual things teenagers do," Elf Kid explained to The FADER over email. "[This session] was our first time in a black cab. We've never MCed in a cab before but it was fun, especially on the roundabout when we were shouting. The Square live is like a house party on stage; we make everyone skank and make noise. We are all hyperactive and have mad energy so make sure you come and see us."
