Karman Faces His Demons With “Cold Front”
“I’ve spent my nights translating misery into music.”
If you've been feeling like Karman has been especially quiet as of late, it's because he has been. The young Beverly Hills beatsmith is readying a new album for release in 2016, but it sounds like in these past few months he has been using his studio time more often for therapeutic purposes. Or as he put it in an email to The FADER, "I've spent my nights translating misery into music."
"Cold Front" is one of the many songs Karman made while reckoning with the loss of Hippos and Tanks founder Barron Machat. (Karman was in Miami with Machat at the time of his fatal car accident). It's nearly five-minutes of cool sounds—icy synth, flutes, and drum—layered in a way that makes it somehow feel more temperate than the title suggests, or maybe even like its approaching warmth.
"To everybody going through a dark time, or anybody waking up each day to a nightmare," he said, "I'm making music for you to shine to, I'm making music to wake you up."
