The best rock songs aren't necessarily the ones that try to innovate; more often, they're the simplest ones, their structure shattered by the duly complex emotions of the humans who are playing them. Dilly Dally's "Desire" is built on just four chords, but it's the finer details of delivery that make it sound, not just huge, but Pixies huge: the uncontrolled feedback that lingers into the opening bars, the gasping, raspy inflections of lead singer Katie Monks, the sludgy, gravity-bound weight of fellow founding member Liz Ball's guitar solos. It hits that ever-elusive sweetspot between total recklessness and sly control, which is probably pretty apt, given what Monks is singing about.
"It's about a huge sexual release, but it's also about fantasies, youth, and purity," Monks told The FADER via email. "Sore is an album about rebirth—hence its disgusting guitar tones and constant moaning. What can I say, happiness is a struggle, but the last thing I'd ever want you or anyone else to do is give up that fight." The Toronto four-piece's debut album, Sore, is out October 9th via Partisan Records in the US and Buzz Records in Canada.
