Watch Damon Albarn Get Carried Off Stage After A Five-Hour Performance

Damon Albarn is well known for his work in Blur and Gorillaz; he’s an accomplished solo artist as well. But he’s still hungry—yesterday, he seemed like he was attempting to set a world record for longest rock set during his performance at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival. Albarn was playing as a part of another one of his projects, African Express. The group took the stage at 11 PM and kept on going until 4 AM, with help from various guests, including Graham Coxon, Laura Mvula, and Nick Zinner.

At 4 AM, Albarn was told that it was time to go, but he wasn’t ready to relinquish the spotlight. He had the crowd singing along to his rendition of the Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go,” and several time he asked the audience to chant for more songs so that the venue would let him keep playing. (Remember that it’s also light almost all night in Denmark during the summer.) Eventually, Africa Express’s stage manager—The Guardian referred to him affectionately as “Big Dave”—carried Albarn away like a sack of potatoes as the crowd hissed, booed, and whistled.

But that wasn’t the end of the party! According to Ian Birrell, who co-founded African Express, Albarn, the band, and a lot of fans “carried on outside the tent for almost an hour. They were drumming against the poles of the tent and chanting.” Music prevailed. Watch the video below.
