Rap can totally reinvent a word in a way that’s rare in other genres. Take Boogie’s “Oh My,” from earlier this year: the hook revolves around the repetition of “oh my goodness,” an anachronistic phrase that seems fitting for grandmas. (The Oxford English Dictionary suggests Shakespeare coined "goodness" in 1623.) But suddenly those three words are the basis for a tough hit, and a roomful of kids are yelling “oh my goodness” in a club.
The new Ty Dolla $ign track—a collaboration with Future and Rae Sremmurd—takes on "blasé." The internet says this word has only been around since the early 19th century, so it’s a little fresher than “goodness,” but either way, it’s about to be shouted loudly in places it wasn’t shouted before. This DJ Spin-produced tune channels some of the relentless power of recent Future mixtapes; it’s also one of the hookiest things Ty has done in a while.
