Iceage’s Elias Bender Rønnenfelt Premieres Marching Church Video For “King Of Song”
The band’s album, ‘This World Is Not Enough,’ drops today on Sacred Bones, Posh Isolation, and Big Love.
Last fall, I spent a couple days with Danish four-piece Iceage and their enigmatic vocalist, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, who perfectly embodied the role of bristling frontman for the duration of the weekend. Well, Rønnenfelt's also the ringleader of another band, Marching Church, which drops its new Sacred Bones full-length, This World Is Not Enough, today. Through he's described the record as "very much a collaborative effort," he also refers to the project as a "dictatorship," and the colorless, '90s-channeling official video for loosely arranged album cut "King Of Song" definitely reflects that; his co-conspirators are present, but Rønnenfelt's very much the king.
He sings in his usual strained, sideways baritone: People die for me/ Fantasize about me, groveling like he's half-asleep, as if fame is such a bore, while staggering around the sparse set. The song and video both explore Rønnenfelt's specialized sort of stardom, while simultaneously providing proof of his fascination with his own narcissism, which—as evidenced here—often results in some oddly affecting art.
