Sinkane Get Trippy In The Video For “Young Trouble”
Check out the poly-pop band’s colorful new video.
Sinkane's latest LP, last year's Mean Love, was the strongest effort yet from Sudanese polyphonic musician Ahmed Gallab and his band, a laid-back collection of sounds that proved as colorfully drifty as it did melodically engaging. "Young Trouble" is one of the album's undeniable standouts, Gallab's honeyed vocals sliding across a web of melody—and the video is a nice hazy compliment to the song's rainbow tones, with trippy digitally-messed footage courtesy of director Philip Di Fiore, who had the following to say about the video:
"I don't know of anyone who has taken video footage and manipulated it by running it through musical equipment and keyboards. We took our inspiration from photographers, filmmakers and videomakers who have dared to be playful and curious by altering, distorting and messing with their work in order to find out what can happen when you push a medium outside of its comfort zone. We were able to get beautiful combinations of colors and waves of light which moved with the musicians- as if we filmed the band live at the Aurora Borealis. It would be very difficult to recreate this type of color and light with stage lighting and it would costs millions to create it with post effects. At this point we have very little control of the result and that's exciting. Ahmed was brave enough to let Sinkane be the guinea pig for this endeavor when other bands and record labels want storyboards and everything predetermined before a camera is even turned on. I told Sinkane, DFA Records and City Slang Records that we had no idea what was going to happen. They were as crazy and excited as we were and gave us the green light to try something new. Since there was no precedent, we feel we are only scratching the surface of what we are capable of doing. The looks we were able to create for Sinkane with this process might be a fraction of what is possible. "
