Listen To Kodak To Graph’s Texture-Heavy, L.A. Theme Song
The Floridan producer blends found sounds and a trip-hop tinge on new single “Los Angeles.”
If you follow the dance/electronic world closely, you may recognize the name Kodak To Graph, aka 23-year-old Floridan producer Michael Maleki. What initially started as a post-rock project has slowly evolved into Maleki's own style of electronic collage, influenced and crafted by sampling the sounds from his life. After announcing his first headline US tour last week, today we're premiering the first single from his upcoming debut album, ISA, which is due out March 10th. "Los Angeles" is a texture-heavy tune that incorporates found sounds and vocal samples in a way that is subtly reminiscent of the Avalanches, with enough low-end to satiate any club crowd.
"Isa is a period of stillness before movement," Maleki told The FADER. "About 8 months ago, in the middle of writing the album, I moved to L.A. from the quiet swamplands of Gainesville, FL. 'Los Angeles,' which sits about halfway through the record, represents the still and quiet of Florida colliding with the static and noise of DTLA. I started writing the tune in the back of a cramped Ford E-350 van while on tour with Slow Magic and finished it at my management's office space on Los Angeles Street situated on the edge of Skid Row in DTLA. It's like a theme song for all bizarro, beautiful and wacky characters/scenery you encounter while strolling through DTLA."
