John Andrews has played in two of my favorite folk acts this side of the millennium: Quilt from Boston and Woods from Brooklyn. Now the multi-instrumentalist is getting ready to release his own solo album (billed as John Andrews & The Yawns) on the label founded by Woods' frontman Jeremy Earl. Lead single "Pennsylvania" definitely gels with the homemade, sad-but-sunny aesthetic I've come to associate with the Woodsist scene; in places, Andrews' gauzy falsetto even sounds a little bit like Earl's.
Andrews started work on the record between his shifts at a Salvation Army in the Amish country, and he recorded "Pennsylvania" on the third floor of his home there. "Our house was real old and not insulated very well," he told FADER over email. "I remember barely being able to feel my fingers when playing guitar. The song is about my relationship to that part of the country." The record's called Bit By The Fang and it's out April 14th.
