In a tweet from last August, LA-based singer Kelela thanked Canadian beatsmith and songwriter Dominic Salole, aka Mocky, for helping "bring out [her] inner faith evans." While she was talking about his help on a Le1f collaboration, the two have worked together on various projects over the last couple years: In her GEN F profile from 2013, Kelela credited Mocky with helping to decipher the melodic gibberish she was singing on an early version of "Floor Show," a steamy song that he co-wrote.
Now Mocky—who cut his teeth on Berlin's "pre-EDM" electro scene, and has also worked with Feist and Jamie Lidell—lives in LA full-time and is prepping a new solo EP. "Sweet Things" is a shimmying, '70s soul-tinged production with one indulgent vocal phrase: Keep giving me sweet things. According to Mocky, the feel-good song came together on a skipped lunch break. "I wasn't hungry," he told FADER in an email, "so I went in and multi-tracked the whole thing while everyone was eating. When I heard people ordering dessert, I had the lyric." Pretty sweet.
