Jarell Perry Turns Drake’s “Own It” Into The Melancholic Banger It Always Could Have Been
The Los Angeles-based singer swaps the original’s more experimental tendencies with some welcome pop immediacy.
Drake's Nothing Was The Same track "Own It" could have been a widescreen, melancholic banger, but he and producers Detail and Noah "40" Shebib opted for something a bit more experimental, withholding catharsis and letting the track's pensive mood sustain with weightless uncertainty throughout. Los Angeles-based R&B artist Jarell Perry recognized the potential for immediacy in "Own It," though, and has delivered upon it here with a decidedly more direct, pop cover. Whereas the original dealt in restraint and discontinuous song structure, Perry's version definitely has a beat drop, and while it might still be deeply atmospheric, there's a gliding momentum undergirding the track that would be right at home in the club. Perry has even given the track a dimly-lit, sensual video to top it all off—check it out above.
