Beacon Make Emo Music That’s Learned to Suck It up and Dance

When I was in my mid-teens, the music on Top of the Pops—the now-defunct UK chart show on BBC TV—seemed to oscillate between strung out emo bands howling into the bemused studio audience and rave crossover hits brought to life with choreographed dance moves. In other words, essential viewing. Maybe Brooklyn duo Beacon were watching too, because their new single "Fault Lines" lands squarely between those two worlds. There's that moody bass, the existential calls into the ether, and those cascading keys that build and crumble like a fall from grace. It's grown up club music, or emo that's learned to suck it up and dance. Either way, it works. Ghostly International will release Beacon's new EP, titled L1, on December 2nd.
