There’s something about ‘80s new wave and synth pop sounds that consistently appeal to artists engaged with technology; the feeling of mediated isolation has proven to be highly compatible with that specific breed of hollow, neon synthesis and cavernous reverb. Groundislava has dipped heavily into this kind of sound world on his new album Frozen Throne—currently available to stream in its entirety over at Hype Machine—using it to construct a narrative about “the search for real love in a future-cyber based reality.” He’s joined by up-and-coming electro soul group Rare Times on a number of the tracks, including the single "Girl Behind The Glass," making it a bit of a collaborative affair. As a Wedidit—the crew consisting of Groundislava, RL Grime, Shlohmo and Ryan Hemsworth—release is wont to do, it offers up a high definition, 420 daydream with eager pop sensibility and considered production. While Groundislava's on your mind, take another listen to his FADER mix from earlier this year, and one of our favorites off the new album, below.
