FADER Mix: Lone
Currently on tour in the US, the UK producer turns in a stirling mix that flows from ambient to hip-hop.
UK producer Matt Cutler, better know as Lone, put out his fifth album this June. Titled Reality Testing and released via R&S Records, it inched his tenderly constructed, house and techno channelling compositions into hip-hop's fringes. That said, there's always been something of a collage aspect to Cutler's work, a drawing together of disparate elements into a river-like flow. So it's a thrill to hear that for his FADER Mix he took a similar approach, skipping the club in favor of a shape-shifting sonic landscape that rolls from ambient to hip-hop. Sink in below, and scroll down for for Lone's US tour dates, tracklist and to find out what he couldn't have made his new album without. Clue: it has wheels.
Where are you right now? Describe your surroundings. In my new flat in London. The rain is pouring down at a ridiculous rate outside and it sounds really cool—feels like I'm in a bit of a cocoon. It's actually the first time it's rained since I've been here so I'm feelin' it to be honest.
What vibe were you going for on this mix? The vibe of this one, I guess, is more a listening thing... sort of like a mini radio show. I wanted it to be a nice little snapshot of some of the tunes I'm listening to a lot. Kinda inspired by Jon Peel; I used to love listening to his show growing up. Though I guess this mix is nowhere near as varied as what he'd put together. I just didn't want to do another club style mix.
What couldn't you have made your new album Reality Testing without? Skate videos. They gave me the biggest boost initially to do something in that style. I had a bit of a eureka moment watching a bunch of tapes I hadn't seen for years when I began writing the record, so I guess without that, the record could have come out completely different. That and wine.
What are the threads between house and hip-hop to your ears? Any time it has a raw, gritty, sample-driven vibe—or a kind of lo-fi, home-made feel—the two things become completely connected (to my ears at least).
What's the last book you read that had a big impact on you? Under The Skin. It freaked me out massively.
What's your favorite dish to cook and how do you make it? Risotto. I couldn't really tell you anything specifically about my process of making a good risotto cause I get quite experimental with it (I have no idea what I'm doing basically). I prefer mine to anyone else's though so I must be doing something right?
