Brooklyn singer-songwriter Tei Shi is, on the surface of it, known for making whisper-y, slow and sensual bedroom pop. A Beyoncé cover might not be exactly what you'd expect to hear from her after last year's Saudade EP, which was full of said whispers, but right from the opening bars of this '80s-leaning take on "No Angel" it's obvious that her breezy vocals and glowing synths were made for this role. Besides, "No Angel" (which was co-written by Chairlift's Caroline Polachek, after all) has more in common with Tei Shi's output than you might expect: her soft-hued indie pop has dangerously sharp corners, with lyrics like I had a dream that you left me, I deserved it (on "M&Ms") using the same bait-and-switch technique as Bey's cutting Baby put your arms around me, tell me I'm a problem. Basically, for a pair of non-angels, this is a match made in heaven.
