Ryn Weaver is like a bolt of lightning: she's apparently come out of nowhere, and yet her music hits in a bright, clear flash, sounding as big as all your favorites. Her debut single "OctaHate," now sitting at almost 1.3 million plays after being live for just a month, was written and produced with Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos and Charli XCX. That list sounds like something dreamt up in a major label boardroom, but Weaver's signed to Blanco's own newly established imprint Friends Keep Secrets. In a comment left in response to a troll on Stereogum, she explained herself: "I met Benny at a party a year back and showed him my Soundcloud…he had already been working with Cashmere Cat a bit… and he showed Michael some of my music that I had produced and written on my own...and we all kinda just started to make some music."
For a 21-year-old to go from producing her own tracks (tagged as #Fairy Pop on Soundcloud) to having all those names riding on her undoubtedly creates a ton of pressure. That's where new her latest song comes in; the second single from Weaver's upcoming EP, "Promises" is the motivational pop anthem of the year, all soaring vocals and colourful synths that hit like a sea breeze. She's got a streak of Sia about her, with a clear knack for an unforgettable chorus and lyrics that speak frankly about stage fright and unfulfilled potential (I meet my mountain then I run and hide). Clearly, though, she's got nothing to worry about.
