Sure, everyone's been busy taking a socially unacceptable amount of #artselfies at the recent Jeff Koons retrospective at The Whitney, but there are still a great deal of lesser-known exhibitions and group shows to check out before the summer art season ends and new exhibitions pop up at galleries throughout the city. You may have already missed the gallery opening nights, where the commentary from art-world spectators flows just as fast as the free wine, but here are some of the exhibitions and you don't want to miss this weekend:
Joyride at Marlborough Chelsea
Only New York City's Bicycle Film Festival has the power to bring art world heavy-hitters such as Ai Weiwei, Rita Ackerman and KAWS together in one gallery space to present their visual expressions of the urban cycling movement. Tom Sach's customized bikes manage to leave the viewer more than impressed, but it’s Leo Fitzpatrick's visual statement on the impact of Citi Bikes (pictured above) that most accurately describes the modern-day New Yorker’s opinion on true cycling. If you haven't read our interview with Daniel Chew and Micaela Durand of art collective BFFA3AE, then you need to do yourself a favor and head to their collaborative show "DTTR," at 47 Canal Street ASAP. The young duo managed to put together a show that successfully marries their individual art tastes while showcasing a new way to collaborate in a singular gallery space. For all the net art-world lovers, this is definitely a show that should be seen in person instead of on a computer screen. On view until August 2nd, located at 47 Canal Street.
Hailed as the “Gallery of Satan”, where foil installations, satanic imagery and pictures of Charles Manson cover the walls, Vector Gallery is a one-of-a-kind exhibition space that plans to re-open to the general public in a new location on August 1st. If kooky subliminal messages, holographic installations that may induce epileptic shock and the not-so-secret underworld tickle your fancy, then you’ll definitely want to be there re-opening night.
