"The Mercedes sign has three beams, one for land, one for air and one for water," Holger Czukay, the legendary co-founder of '60s experimental rock band Can, said over email via his label's publicist. "This (the remix) was the second beam of the Mercedes sign. On water we will approach the next level. I'm driving an old Mercedes 380." Inspiration remains everywhere for the the 76-year-old Czukay. The German musician remixed his own well-travelled ambient track "Music In The Air" from his 1987 album Rome Remains Rome for a new reissue that brings together tracks from his solo albums Rome... and 1984's Der Osten Ist Rot. This contemporary version of "Music In The Air" plays with the layering of the song's elements, bringing the loose drums to the foreground and allowing the languid, occasionally ominous, melody to snake its way through. Der Osten Ist Rot / Rome Remains Rome is due out July 8th via Groenland Records.
