Before today, I hadn't heard Kelis' "Rumble" from her recently-released Food LP, but after listening to this remix by London's Darren Cunningham bka Actress (via Pitchfork), I was curious. The original's definitely got soul, but the Actress bootleg trades that for ominous desperation. Kelis crying out Baby don't go— hoarse and heartbroken over metallic synth electricity—feels futuristic and bleak. The end is particularly severe; there's no more vocals or really traces of Kelis at all, just a staggering, big-budget tension. For more on Actress, read an interview about his newest album, Ghettoville, and why, when producing, he's "not looking to create a perfect listening experience for somebody."
