The DMV's most uncategorizable rapper, GoldLink, and wavy Montreal beatmaker Kaytranada join forces on "Sober Thoughts," an instant summertime backyard party staple that's way less tight-laced than its title would suggest, even as it details a fairly toxic relationship. (The title comes with a sly wink—it's deliberately dropping today, on GoldLink's 21st birthday.) It's one of his most straightforwardly "rap" songs yet, rooted in breezy, Tribe-style boom-bap instead of the skittering "future bounce" of his debut mixtape The God Complex, but there's a freshness here that circumvents wistful, remember-the-90s nostalgia. Stream it below, then check out FADER's recent interviews with both GoldLink and Kaytranada, who's releasing an EP on XL this summer.
